NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - More than 16,000 elementary students will receive school supplies through community donations collected through United Way of Greater Nashville’s Stuff the Bus event.

UWGN said it’s goal for this year’s event was 15,000 backpacks, but donations exceeded the goal by 1,060.

“Over July 14th and 15th, 497 volunteers gathered at Nissan Stadium to drop off supplies, assemble backpacks and celebrate the success of Stuff the Bus,” UWGN said.

The nonprofit said its volunteers spent more than 1,988 hours filling backpacks with the collected and donated supplies from 55 companies and individuals.

“Backpacks will be distributed to students in need to 58 locations across Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Hickman, Houston, Montgomery, Robertson, Stewart, Sumner and Williamson counties,” UWGN said.

Since the Stuff the Bus event began, UWGN said the program has helped more than 153,060 students receive school supplies.
