GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A student who took a CPR and Stop the Bleed course in Goodlettsville was able to put his training to use after he was hurt in an accident, according to the Goodlettsville Fire Department (GFD).

The GFD said the student was working outside when he cut off the top of his thumb. Due to his training learned at CPR and Stop the Bleed, officials said he knew what to do to try save his thumb.

“His status report at this time is that healing is going well, and even though he has a way to go, he was grateful he had learned training for that kind of accident,” GFD said in a Facebook post.

GFD said they have three more courses this fall for CPR and Stop the Bleed training.

In the CPR class, the course provides hands-on instruction and certification in CPR and the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).

GFD said the CPR class is free to attend and participants who wish to obtain an official certification card can do so for $23.

The Stop the Bleed course is also free to attend. The course teaches participants how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and respond quickly and effectively with three techniques.

“Severe arterial bleeding can be fatal in as little as three minutes, but with the right skills, bystanders can take immediate action to save a life,” according to the GFD website.
