Search underway for driver who allegedly hit, killed bicyclist after speeding away from police near Davidson County line

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WSMV) - Update: Fatal crash investigators with the Metro Nashville Police Department are pursuing strong leads in the hit-and-run crash that killed a cyclist late Wednesday night.

Officers responded to the crash in the area of Nolensville Pike near Burkitt Road.

Police said shortly after 11 p.m., a blue Honda Civic struck 31-year-old Blaise Schaeffer of Nolensville. Schaeffer was taken to TriStar Nolensville, where he was declared dead.

Police said that the investigation shows that the driver of the Honda was driving erratically northbound on Nolensville Pike. A city of Nolensville police officer attempted to stop the vehicle before the collision and it fled.

After the crash, the Honda became disabled at Nolensville Pike and Concord Hills Drive. Police said the driver ran away, but a female passenger was found at a nearby business.

Officers are working to confirm information concerning the driver and find him.

“Anyone with information about the hit-and-run driver is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward,” MNPD said.

Earlier: Driver wanted in deadly hit-and-run of bicyclist near Davidson County line

The Metro Nashville Police Department is looking for the driver involved in a deadly crash that killed a bicyclist near the Davidson County line early Thursday morning.

Fatal crash detectives were called to the intersection of Nolensville Pike and Burkitt Road for reports of a deadly crash in the early morning hours on Thursday.

The investigation shows that a man and a woman were driving a blue Honda sedan on Nolensville Pike when they struck a person on a bicycle.

MNPD reported that the bicyclist was found at the scene and transported to the hospital, where the person was declared deceased.

The driver attempted to drive away but crashed into a culvert while trying to avoid another vehicle, according to MNPD.

The male driver then exited the sedan and ran away, MNPD reported. He is believed to be armed.

Officers at the scene said the female passenger then walked to a nearby Taco Bell, where she was taken into custody.

The search for the driver continues.
