Clean-up efforts well underway for Maury County neighborhoods hit by overnight tornadoes
The National Weather Service says two tornadoes touched down in Maury County early Monday morning.
MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. (WSMV) - Neighborhoods in and outside of Columbia, TN, are getting used to hearing the sounds of chainsaws.
It’s been a consistent noise as workers and residents are removing trees and debris from their neighborhoods after multiple low-level tornadoes dropped down in their area overnight Sunday into Monday.
The two tornadoes, confirmed by the National Weather Service, were as follows:
- Hampshire EF-2 120 mph winds 400 yards wide 5.10 miles long
- Mt. Pleasant EF-1 100 mph winds 300 yards wide 4.10 miles long

The Hampshire tornado tore through a home off of Rippey Lake Road, continuing on towards South Cross Bridges Road and Ashwood Road, leaving behind splintered and knotted trees, as well as debris aloft.
“When names were actually given of roads, that’s when it really hit home,” Karin Shewbart said. “It made me get into the closet.”
The Hampshire tornado just missed Shewbart’s home on S. Cross Bridges, but she says based on past events, she’s grateful for the outcome of the overnight weather system.
“It could have been a lot worse,” Shewbart said. “So, I’m grateful it was as calm as it was.”
Over in Mount Pleasant, just off Old Sunnyside Lane, dozens of trees were knocked down or onto houses, fences were destroyed, and roofs needed repair after the EF-1 made its way through the community.
“Seeing people come together,” Andrew Phillips said. “Seeing the blessing of the neighborhood, like this street and the neighborhoods nearby. It’s been a real blessing during times like this.”
In the heavy residential neighborhood, a trampoline was launched from the backyard of the home it belongs to, over the top of the home and into the front yard. A tree also fell onto a home in the Hunters Glen subdivison, but no one was hurt.
Contractors tell WSMV4 that a power line and gas line were ripped in two, which needed quick attention due to how close by they were.
“The only things that were damaged for us were these things out here that are easily replaceable,” Phillips said. “Our family is okay, that’s the first thing we’re grateful for.”
Neighbors say they’re now bracing for the next round of projected severe weather set to hit the Midstate on Wednesday.
