MANHATTAN, NY. (WSMV) - Bullet casings found at the scene where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot dead on Wednesday had messages written on them, according to an NBC News report.

A law enforcement official confirmed to NBC News that the casings contained the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.”

The 50-year-old Minnesota native was gunned down on Wednesday in what police are calling a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack” outside the New York Hilton Midtown on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, New York.

Thompson was not traveling with a security detail despite receiving several threats, according to NBC’s report. He was hit at least once in the back and once in the right calf, NBC News reported.

Footage of the shooting was released Wednesday night, and the gunman remains at large.
