MTSU closes after reported suicide, university says
MTSU security assured students and staff that no immediate threat was present at the campus.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) closed on Tuesday, Oct. 29, due to a reported suicide inside the James E. Walker Library.
On Monday afternoon, Murfreesboro police reported there was no threat on the campus of MTSU after the apparent suicide.
“There is no immediate threat to the campus,” police said in a social media post.
MTSU said they will be closed, with the exception of operations essential to public safety and service to on-campus residents.
The library will remain closed until further notice as Murfreesboro police continue their investigation.
MTSU said the university will reopen Wednesday, Oct. 30.
MTSU’s president released a statement to students following the apparent suicide:
“The Blue Raider family is mourning the loss of a student who died by suicide this afternoon at the James E. Walker Library.”
“The student’s emergency contact has been notified of the student’s passing, and we are working to offer counseling support to the campus community,” McPhee said. “Community members who need support can meet our counseling team in the KUC, room 322, where our trained counselors will offer support and crisis services in group and individual settings, beginning at 4:15 pm today.”
MT Lamba, an inclusive LGBTQIA+ and ally student association at MTSU reports that the student who died was its vice president.
