NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Repairs are underway after a water main in Wedgewood-Houston caused the road to crumble.

The break led to widespread flooding and water pressure issues over multiple hours, impacting those in the Wedgewood-Houston area.

MWS contractor, Sutherland Construction, excavated a 36″ cast iron pipe from Chester Street that had a substantial break on Wednesday afternoon.

Pipe repairs will continue into early November

“I was truly distraught. Luckily, I wasn’t home to really get the effect of it, but I was really upset,” a resident in the area said.

Metro Water Service tells WSMV4 the pipe may have ruptured due to natural cause.

Here are instructions on how to watch WSMV4 live on various platforms.

During cooler months, pipes are more susceptible to damage due to the temperature of the ground and aging infrastructure.

MWS averages about 450 water main breaks a year, most of them occur during the winter.

Repairs are expected to continue over the next few weeks along Chester Street.

There is no word yet on when the project will be completed.
