Benton County Schools adopts new cell phone policy in response to new state law
The new policy restricts students from using cell phones, personal laptops, tablets and smart watches for the entirety of the school day.
CAMDEN, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Benton County School system is adopting a new cell phone policy this year in response to a new state law.
HB932/SB897, which was effective on July 1, “requires all Tennessee public school districts to limit the use of cell phones and other personal communication devices during instructional time,” BCS said.

Under the new policy, Benton County Schools students are restricted from using cell phones, personal laptops, tablets and smart watches from the beginning of the school day to the final dismissal bell.
The devices will have to be turned off and kept in lockers or backpacks throughout the school day.
“Please note that exceptions to this policy may be made for students with disabilities or specific learning needs, as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan,” BCS said.
Students will also be allowed to use their phones during an emergency or when authorized by teachers.
Benton County joins multiple other school districts adopting new policies, such as Williamson and Putnam Counties, as a result of the new state law.
