TN bill restricting cell phones in schools advancing
If it passes, the rule will take effect beginning next school year.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Soon, cell phones could face restrictions in Tennessee schools as a bill is advancing in the General Assembly.
On Monday, the House passed a bill requiring public schools to develop policies blocking students from using cell phones, tablets and smartwatches during class instruction.
The bill also says schools must come up with a plan to notify parents of emergencies (for example: lockdowns or school shootings).

There are exceptions to the no phones in the class rule, like allowing students with disabilities to use them for learning and when a student is using a phone or smart device for a classroom presentation. Under the bill, districts can choose how students are disciplined for breaking the rule and whether phones can be used outside of class.
Schools can also decide whether to let students keep their phones on them or lock them up. The bill blocking cell phones in class now moves on to the Senate for a vote. If it passes, the rule will take effect beginning next school year.
