MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Murfreesboro Police Department is investigating whether or not speed was a factor in Monday night’s crash that left one person dead and a 5-year-old child critically injured.

MPD reports that the crash occurred on Middle Tennessee Boulevard between Park Avenue and Haley Road at about 6:45 p.m.

A male passenger in a Mazda MZ6 was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The child was trapped in the same car and had to be extricated by responding firefighters, according to MPD.

The child and the female driver of the Mazda were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The child is in critical condition while the driver is stable, according to police.

The driver of the other car (a Nissan Rogue) was taken to Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital. He is listed in stable condition.

Police believed that the driver of the Rogue was traveling westbound when it collided with the Mazda that was trying to make a left turn. Investigators are looking into whether speed was a contributing factor in the crash.

“The force of the impact caused the Mazda to crash into a car parked in a parking lot,” MPD added. “The fatal crash remains under investigation.”
