Vol fans board special flight to Columbus for College Football Playoffs
A flight of nearly 170 people flew out of Mcghee Tyson to Columbus Friday afternoon.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - While thousands of Vol fans will drive to Columbus to cheer on Tennessee as they match up with Ohio State, some are taking to the sky to get there quickly.
Mcghee Tyson Airport announced that a United flight was available to about 170 fans that left at 4 p.m. in Knoxville Friday.
“Typically you only see it when there’s a bowl game so far that you need to fly to get there. In this situation, they know that the Vols will travel and it’s a good opportunity for them,” said airport spokesperson Becky Huckaby.
With reports from ticket sites saying that a large portion of their sales have come from Tennessee fans, it’s incentivized people to make the trip even more.
“From what they’re saying, we’re going to have a lot of Vol fans there. So I expect us to make a difference. We make a difference in just about every stadium we go to,” said a Vol fan who is flying to the game.
Huckaby said that even though there were only a few days for fans to buy the tickets for Friday’s flight, it was nearly a completely sold-out flight.
If Tennessee wins their game on Saturday against Ohio State, they would then go play Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
Huckaby said there have already been talks with airlines about adding a direct flight from Knoxville to Los Angeles so that fans could get to the game more easily.
The Vols' fate moving forward is still undecided, as are any future flight plans out of Mcghee Tyson.
