WHITEVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - One inmate is dead and others were left hospitalized after several fights at the Hardeman County Correctional Facility on Saturday, according to CoreCivic’s director of public affairs Ryan Gustin.

At about 12:25 a.m. a group of inmates at the facility were involved in separate, but likely related, fights. Staff members intervened to stop the fights and were able to provide medical assistance before the injured were taken to a local hospital.

A total of six inmates were hospitalized from the fights, according to Gustin.

Later, one inmate died as a result of his injuries and was pronounced dead at about 3:49 a.m. Two of the inmates remain hospitalized while the others were returned to HCCF. There were no injuries to any facility staff members.

“Our partners at the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) were immediately notified of these incidents. TDOC’s Office of Investigations and Conduct (OIC) is handling this investigation, which remains ongoing, with the full support of our facility staff and leadership team,” Gustin added.
