Nashville woman said bags are being stolen from BNA and taken to Chattanooga
“Anyone can just walk away with your luggage and belongings.”
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A woman is warning people to watch their bags at the airport after a man is accused of stealing bags and taking them to Chattanooga.
“Anyone can just walk away with your luggage and belongings,” Shannon DeLao said.
DeLao was told that when she got off her plane here in Nashville, her luggage would be waiting on her, but that didn’t happen, despite taking precautions.
“However, the next morning, I tracked the American Airlines tag only to find that my bag was in Chattanooga,” DeLao said.
But her bag wasn’t redirected, police sent her a picture of her luggage on the baggage carousel at BNA earlier that morning of July 18 minutes before someone else picked her suitcase up.
“He takes a shuttle from Chattanooga to BNA and BNA back to Chattanooga using a false name,” DeLao said.
Chattanooga police confirmed that the bag was found in a Chattanooga parking lot, thanks to the air tag she put in her bag. The bag was torn up with nothing inside.
DeLao said BNA police told her this is the second time this same person has stolen luggage from the airport in the last two months and now they’re investigating.
“We have to go through all of these security precautions and measures just to get through TSA but then on the other end of it there’s no one watching our things. I’m fine, everything can be repurchased, it’s just the feeling of being violated with nobody to really care at BNA,” DeLao said.
BNA released the following statement:
“Our Department of Public Safety (DPS) works daily to execute our comprehensive security program. While the responsibility for checked baggage resides with individual airlines, Nashville International Airport® (BNA®) collaborates closely with its airline partners to ensure a secure travel experience for all its passengers. Additionally, BNA prioritizes passenger security with the presence of our DPS officers within baggage claim areas, throughout the terminal, and throughout all BNA property. We remain committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for today and generations to come.”
