NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Westmoreland High School senior Mary Atkins was seriously injured in a sledding accident on Sunday, Jan. 21.

The senior was flown to a Nashville hospital where she immediately went into surgery for injuries to her neck and back, according to a GoFundMe, along with social media posts from her church and school.

The GoFundMe, organized by Chris Alexander, has already surpassed its goal of raising $5,000. It currently sits at more than $13,000 as of Monday morning.

“As you can imagine, this will have a very detrimental impact on the family with medical bills and lost time at work. This family has gone through so much these last 6 months so anything that can alleviate the stress during this time would be greatly appreciated,” the GoFundMe said.

The girl’s church, Caney Fork Missionary Baptist said the teen underwent emergency surgery and had complications.

“Please help us lift up Sis. Mary Lyn and her Mom, Emerlyn Gomez Atkins in prayer,” the church said.

Westmoreland High School is asking its students and staff to wear lime green or any other neon color on Monday and to Monday night’s game in support of Atkins.

Reminder to all at WHS - We are asking everyone to wear LIME GREEN or any other neon color on Monday and to Monday night’s game in support of Mary Atkins.
