NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A longtime Davidson County criminal court judge has announced she will be retiring at the end of May.

Judge Cheryl Blackburn announced that she has advised Gov. Bill Lee that she intends to retire on May 31 after holding her position for 29 years.

During her nearly 30-year tenure, Blackburn oversaw tens of thousands of cases and presided over hundreds of trials. Before her time as a judge, she was a prosecutor for 17 years.

“The greatest honor for my professional career has been to serve the public as a criminal court judge, and I am humbled that Governor Sundquist had the confidence to appoint me as a judge,” Blackburn said. “Also, I am grateful to my two former bosses, the late General Thomas Shriver and General Torry Johnson, for the opportunities they each gave me, which greatly prepared me to become a criminal court judge. I am so thankful to my parents, friends, colleagues, staff and supporters for their friendship, advice, and support throughout my career.”

She added that she’s excited about the next chapter of her life and plans to continue to give back to the community.
