Hundreds rally in Nashville against mass deportation
Rally participants urged against misinformation and discrimination in immigrant communities.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Hundreds of people rallied against mass deportations and misinformation at Centennial Park.
Speakers at the rally and those who attended shared why they believe mass deportations are only the start of even bigger issues in the United States.
“We’re not asking to be seen as Latino Americans; we are Latino Americans,” an organizer shouted into a megaphone.
They detailed why they believe those being deported are meant to be in the United States of America.
A push for what some were calling justice led about 200 people to rally around the Parthenon in Centennial Park Monday afternoon to spread a message of unity.
The group spent moments chanting slogans like, “No fear, no hate, no ICE in our state,” amid ongoing mass deportations in multiple states.
Saira Lagunes, a Latina Nashvillian, came to the rally with signs and friends and shared her thoughts on the deportations.
“I came from parents who came here with nothing and gave me everything,” Lagunes said.
For other illegal immigrants who came to the United States to give their children a better life and are now being deported, Lagunes said she and dozens of others are fighting for them.
“I think it’s really sad,” Lagunes said. “Why separate families? I feel like Americans just don’t realize that since they have the privilege and they’re not in our shoes, they praise it. But it’s just not right.”
Metro Council Member Zulfat Suara also came to stand with them.
“People don’t know that we contribute so much to this country,” Suara said. “There is a lot of money that we put in. The culture, the economics, all of who we are is being challenged, and for what?”
Leaders said the rally was aimed at fighting misinformation, discrimination and the hate for people they feel were once loved.
