NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - An investigation into a self-defense claim is underway in connection to a fatal shooting, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

MNPD said shots were fired during alleged altercation between 50-year-old Richard Trout and 23-year-old Skyler Whitefield-Brewner Saturday morning just before 9 a.m. in the parking lot of Bar-B-Cutie on Gallatin Pike North.

Trout reportedly ran into the restaurant with multiple gunshot wounds and was then taken to Skyline Medical Center. He died at the hospital from his injuries, MNPD said.

Police said Whitefield-Brewner fled the scene after the incident, but he later went to MNPD Headquarters and spoke with detectives.

Currently, no charges have been filed in connection to the shooting, but he will be booked on two outstanding warrants for reckless driving and evading arrest.

“The fatal shooting investigation will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office at its conclusion,” said MNPD.
