NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A new father to a seven-month-old baby girl, De’ Angelo Black’s family said he had a lot to look forward to this year, and now he won’t get a chance to experience it.

He died on Monday after being shot while riding in a car on Interstate 24 on Sunday afternoon.

“My nephew just is 20. He [had] a full life ahead. He has a baby and everything,” Black’s uncle Robert Black said.

His uncle said they were together on Sunday afternoon when they noticed a car following them as they left a North Nashville gas station. When they merged onto Interstate 24 from Interstate 40 he said they started hearing gunshots.

“I [told] everybody to hold their head down. I was just rushing until I couldn’t [any] more. And then all I heard [were] shots. And then I turned around and saw my nephew,” Black said.

De’ Angelo was rushed to the hospital from the Shelby Avenue Exit on Sunday. Monday morning he died from his gunshot wounds. So far there have been no arrests, police believe they found the car that was involved abandoned at a North Nashville apartment complex.

His family spoke to us just after leaving the hospital and said it was hard to process.

“I thought it was a joke when they called and said that he was shot. So I get here and it’s true,” Regina Black, the victim’s grandma, said.

They said he was a very cheerful child who loved to goof around with his family.

“He loved playing basketball [and joking with] people. He was just De’ Angelo. He loved everybody. He never met a stranger,” Regina Black said.

Now they’re banding together to make sure his young daughter will be taken care of.

“I’m going to miss him a lot. I don’t know how I’m going to raise her without her daddy,” the mother said.
