Disney inventor behind the lightsaber to be inducted in the National Inventors Hall of Fame
(CNN) - The inventor behind Disney’s live-action lightsaber is being honored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Lanny Smoot started working at Disney 25 years ago.
The Disney research fellow and Imagineer has more than 100 patents, 74 of which he created during his time at Disney.
Smoot’s inventions include the extendable lightsaber used in Disney live entertainment, Disney’s new HoloTile floor and the interactive koi ponds at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel.
Smoot said he’s now working on a handful of new inventions that could lead to even more patents.
He will be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Washington on May 9.
The only other Disney employee to earn the same recognition is Walt Disney himself.
