(Meredith/CNN) -- A two-year-old boy in Florida was able to save his own life thanks to swim lessons.

"I know what could've happened. That's when I get emotional, like, I realize how bad it could have been," the boy's mother, Traci Siegel, told WPBF. "I mean if we hadn't heard the splash and he hadn't had swim lessons. I don't know if he'd be here."

Siegel said their home is undergoing renovations and, as a result of that, the family had to remove the fence that surrounds their pool.

That's when 2-year-old Kyle ventured out toward the body of water after his older brother accidentally left the door open that leads to the pool.

That's when Kyle fell in. But, thanks to the swimming lessons he's taken, he was able to save himself.

"We saw Kyle float to the top, roll on his back and swim to the edge of the pool and get out," his mother said.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, unintentional drowning is among the leading causes of death for children under the age of four.
