(Meredith/CNN) - Today, meat lovers will unite to celebrate a very popular protein: bacon.

Bacon Day is an unofficial national holiday that falls on Dec. 30 each year.

Danya “D” Goodman and Meff “Human Cannonball" Goodman created the celebration in 1997 to bring people together, according to National Day Calendar.

The founders recommend eating bacon while viewing movies that feature actor Kevin Bacon -- or films that have the word "bacon" in the title.

Of course, you can eat it however you want. The options are virtually limitless, whether you choose to have your bacon with eggs, on a burger, as a pizza topping or dipped in chocolate.
