The suspect charged with shooting and killing a teenager in East Nashville told police it was all an accident.
Joshua Hockett, 19, is charged with criminal homicide. He was booked into jail just before 2 a.m. Thursday and is being held on $150,000 bond.
A resident at the Berkshire Apartments called police after finding the 15-year-old victim just before 5 p.m. Wednesday on Porter Road.
The victim, later identified as Jeremiah Shelton, was found lying in the doorway of an apartment with a gunshot wound. Shelton was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later died.
“I need y’all to pray for my family I just lost my oldest son today,” said Shelton's mother in a Facebook post.
Shelton was a ninth-grade student at Whites Creek High School. In a statement, Metro Nashville Public Schools said he was "full of life and personality."MNPS was notified with very sad news last night that one of its students at Whites Creek High School was killed. He was a popular student in the ninth grade at Whites Creek and was admired by both staff and students.
'He was full of life and personality. This death of a Whites Creek High School Family member hurts deeply. Without question, this is another life taken too soon,' said Dr. James Bailey, principal, Whites Creek H.S.
The entire MNPS staff extends heartfelt sympathy to Jeremiah’s family and friends. Counselors will be on hand today at the school to support faculty, staff and students.Hockett was one of four teens that police interviewed about the shooting. According to the arrest report, he told police that he was "play fighting" with Shelton when he accidentally shot him. Police said the three other teens corroborated Hockett's story.
After obtaining a search warrant, detectives said they found two handguns at the scene.
This is the third shooting that has happened at the Berkshire Apartments within the past two years.
