A man recently convicted on drug charges was killed late Tuesday night in an Antioch motel.

Police said Dhargham Ateia, 27, was shot at the InTown Suites, 2823 Murfreesboro Pike. Ateia received two-year supervised probated sentences on June 1 after being convicted of felony possession of 28 pounds of marijuana for resale and gun possession during the commission of a drug felony on July 3, 2017.

Investigators said Ateia had just arrived at the motel where he was staying. His brother, who was on the second floor, reported hearing yelling and multiple gunshots from the parking area below.

Ateia was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.

Police said at the time of the murder that Ateia was free on $30,000 bond in regard to his Oct. 24, 2017, arrest on charges of gun possession by a convicted felon, misdemeanor drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. It was later determined the gun in that case was stolen. Ateia was arrested for theft of the gun in April 2018. He was released from jail without having to post a bond.
