MT. JULIET, TN (WSMV) - A man is behind bars this morning after police say he pointed a high-intensity laser at a commercial aircraft in flight and a tractor trailer driver on Interstate 40.
Mt. Juliet Police said 136 passengers were on board the plane when the man pointed the laser at the jet.
Moments ago, officers tracked down and arrested a suspect who pointed a high intensity laser at a passenger aircraft in flight with 136 passengers onboard & a tractor-trailer driver, driving on I-40. Police say dispatch was first notified by the tractor trailer driver, then by air traffic control. A separate witness was able to point out a hotel room on Hershel Drive where the laser was coming from.
Officers located the man in a room at the Quality Inn and arrested him.
The identity of the suspect has not been made available at this time.
A statement from the FAA was released saying:
The crew of American Airlines Flight 2232 reported that a green laser illuminated their Airbus A320 around 8:45 p.m. local time on Tuesday while the plane was about 10 miles from Nashville International Airport. The aircraft landed safely and no injuries were reported. The flight took off from Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. The FAA notified the Mount Juliet Police Department.
