Two people were injured in an explosion at Smelter Service Corporation in Maury County on Thursday morning.

According to the Maury County EMA director, rainwater leaked onto the floors of the recycling plant and came into contact with molten aluminum, which caused the blast.

The explosion blew off part of the roof and injured two people in the process.

One victim has severe burns and was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition. The second victim had minor burns but declined to go to the hospital.

Smelter Service Corporation is located on Arrow Mines Road in Mount Pleasant. At the aluminum recycling plant, employees melt aluminum at thousands of degrees.

The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be investigating the incident.
