Former Metro officer guilty in shooting death of wife

A Davidson County Criminal Court jury has found a former Metro police officer guilty in the shooting death of his wife.

Deon Cartmell is guilty of second-degree murder in the March 2010 death of Shari Cartmell. The verdict was announced just after 10 p.m. Friday.

All along, Cartmell claimed his wife accidentally shot herself.

Defense attorney Jim Todd said earlier this week that the death was an accidental discharge of the weapon and Shari had the gun in her hand when it went off. He said, "this is not a crime, this is a tragedy."

Sentencing will begin Oct. 7. Cartmell faces a sentence of 15 to 25 years in prison.
