An investigation is underway to determine how a 2-year-old in Overton County was injured on Friday night.

Family members of Kayden Blodgett claim a "county cop in Livingston" hit the toddler outside his family's home on Swan Lane, but Overton County Sheriff John Garrett told News4 the incident is still under investigation.

"I am not bashing the cop! I'm sure he's dealing with a lot from what happened just as much as we are!" Kayden's aunt, Ashlei Howard, wrote on Facebook. "[We] just don't understand how he didn't see [the] child!"

While he hesitated to give many details, Garrett said a deputy was serving a civil warrant to someone at the home when an incident occurred involving a two or three-year-old child who suffered a head laceration and had to be LifeFlighted to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.

Garrett would not confirm the details of the incident or if a deputy was involved.

Since the incident, Kayden has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

"We can't thank everyone enough for all the thoughts and prayers that have been sent Kayden's way," his mother, Cassie Blodgett, wrote on Facebook. "What happened was definitely tragic but it could've been so much worse than what it was, and we're so blessed to still have him here. We have a long road ahead of us and this is something we will carry with us forever, but everything will eventually heal and get better. Kayden is home now and feeling way better than we could've hoped for, but more prayers are always welcome."

According to Sheriff Garrett, THP officials will begin investigating the incident on Monday.
