Davidson inmates write life stories through song

There was some incredible songwriting and singing from an unusual place on Tuesday.

Former Chicago Bears football player Tommie Harris, who people call a Ray Charles sound-alike, is in town working on a songwriting project.

On Tuesday he was helping Davidson County inmates write their life stories through song.

“It’s an effort that brought songwriting and the music world into the environment that we focus on,” said Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall. “There’s no magic cure for some of the issues. We’re trying to find ways to bring people to a point in their life that they realize they need to make a change and music has the ability to do that.

“If it reaches one person, we think it’s worth it. We think we’ve reached many.”

The inmates, who are part of the Redemption Songs program, will each partner with local professional songwriters to help them write their own anthems of change.
