Lottery and sweepstakes scams are becoming one of the most common forms of fraud in Middle Tennessee and across the country according to a new study by the Better Business Bureau.
The study found this type of fraud is running rampant on Facebook and through texts straight to our phones.
In the Midstate, these scams have taken over 200 victims, stealing $73,000 from them in the last year.
“Most of the victims are not greedy,” said Brandi Zaccardi with the Better Business Bureau. “They usually think of the good things they can do for their families and communities if they win that prize.”
Scammers can be very persuasive.
If you’re being pressured to make a decision quickly, that should be a red flag.
Always take the time to research something first before you buy it.
The BBB Scam Tracker is an online database where you can report these scams to help police catch the criminals behind them.
