Authorities investigate church arson, vandalism in Springfield

Authorities in Robertson County are investigating a church arson and vandalism in Springfield Sunday.

According to dispatchers, fire and police responded to the fire at Beards Chapel Baptist on Beards Chapel Road around 8 a.m.

The church's pastor told Channel 4 that someone broke into the church by kicking in the back door. Then the intruder or intruders set fire to 4 pews, and ransacked the pastor's office.

The pastor said a similar incident occurred in February at Beards Chapel. Thieves broke in and stole 2 speakers, smashed pictures, knocked over the refrigerator and soda machine.

The church is holding services in another location in Springfield while police investigate.
