MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - A man shot who shot himself in the face after arguing with his girlfriend has been taken to a Nashville hospital, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said Friday night.

The sheriff’s office said Deviset Patton, 41, of Nashville, was in the car with his girlfriend driving on Interstate 24 when they began arguing around 5:30 p.m. He shot himself in the face, according to the sheriff’s office, then she pulled over and called 911.

When first responders began arriving, Patton ran, deputies said.

“As they approached, he took off on foot running down the interstate with a pistol in his hand,” Rutherford County Detective Sgt. Ty Downing said in a news release. “Deputies led by Sgt. David Alford closed traffic in both directions because of an armed man running on the freeway.”

Patton refused commands to drop the weapon.

The SWAT Team responded. A K9 stopped Patton and SWAT Team deputies took him into custody.

Patton was taken to Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital and later transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh said charges may be pending.

The interstate reopened around 7:45 p.m.
