Why the secrecy?

Does Rutherford County Sheriff Truman Jones believe if he keeps his mouth shut, nobody will know his internal problems? He seems to have more than his share with his officers.

But he seems to be hiding under his desk and not returning interview requests.

Several days ago, Jones reportedly handed a 10-day suspension to his patrol Lieutenant Glenn Morton.

That's not surprising. He hasn't returned phone calls about other problems.

According to inside sources, Morton was accused of grabbing a female radio dispatcher. It was said to have happened in a hallway. I'm told the dispatcher still doesn't know why it occurred.

So, why would the sheriff keep quiet about this incident?

His department doesn't mind telling the media about an arrested drunk driver.

Jones is still quiet about what happened in July to his lead detective, Sgt. Mark Warf.

The 20-year veteran officer was working one day and unceremoniously gone the next.

Warf is still under investigation by the U.S. Postal Service, but the sheriff refuses to talk about it.

Then, there's another investigation into Sheriff Jones’ department over four jail officers and a maintenance worker. Some of them reportedly are accused of inappropriate relations with jail prisoners.

But give the sheriff the benefit of the doubt. If I was running a department with that many problems, I'd probably keep my mouth shut also.
