Two Police Unions Battle It Out In Nashville

Oil and water don't mix and neither do the Teamsters and the Metro Fraternal Order of Police. In question is which of the two unions best represents Nashville’s police officers.

When the Teamsters Local 327 moved into town with a bunch of fanfare, it made a lot of noise about the benefits their new members would receive.

Teamster officials announced they would work for a 25 percent increase in officers’ pensions with taxpayers picking up the full tab.

But the public can forget about that happening.

Hundreds of police officers dropped their membership in the F.O.P. and joined up with the Teamsters.

Local 327 was certified as the union representing the Nashville police but times have changed.

It is reported several hundred officers have become disillusioned with the Teamsters and dropped out.

F.O.P officials are laying plans to ask for a new vote on decertifying the Teamsters.

The Teamsters union is not the same as it was back in the 1960s.

Back then it carried out a rein of terror while trying to organize local companies.

There was even a shoot out between top union officials.

International President Jimmy Hoffa went to prison after being charged here and convicted in Chattanooga for trying to bribe a member of a federal grand jury.

Lt.Calvin Hullet, a former F.O.P president, left the Metro Police Department earlier this year and became an organizer with the International Teamsters Union.

Hullett was arrested the other day on an aggravated burglary charge.

He is accused of secretly installing sophisticated video cameras at the F.O.P.'s Summer Camp for youngsters.

Police said Hullett was trying to find questionable conduct by police counselors, but Channel 4 News is told it didn't work.

So, where does this union fight go from here?
