At 10 a.m., a cloud of the substance, identified as sodium chlorite, could be seen coming from the tractor-trailer. Fire officials said the material is not combustible.

Authorities have a 150-foot containment area around the crash site, which is near exit 54. A hazmat team and 26 emergency vehicles were working to cleanup the area.

Sodium chlorite is a chemical compound that is used in the manufacturing of paper or as a disinfectant at water treatment plants.

Traffic was rerouted onto Murfreesboro Road before the interstate was back open Thursday afternoon.

No injuries were reported.
