Mayor Karl Dean and TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely said the project is focused on Hillsboro Pike and hopes to alleviate traffic problems that plague this area.Plans include road resurfacing from Interstate 440 to Harding Place and adding a center turn lane from Sharondale Drive to Crestmoor Road. The project is scheduled to begin on June 12 and completed by October at a cost of $2.3 million. There will be lane closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., with the intention to limit weekend work to only four weekends."Some of the congestion on this section of Hillsboro Road can be attributed to left turn movements that currently must be made from one of the four travel lanes," said Nicely in a press release. "The addition of this center turn lane will help eliminate some of the delays in this area and will make those turns much safer for drivers."TDOT said it has worked closely with Green Hills residents and business owners, Metro Nashville agencies, the Green Hills Action Partners and the Chamber of Commerce West Area Business Council for input on the project."I believe this turn lane will have a very positive impact on drivers' ability to travel through Green Hills with fewer delays," said Dean in a press release. "We have also worked with TDOT to make improvements to bus stops and pedestrian crosswalks on Hillsboro Road, which will increase safety for the many pedestrians and mass transit users in the area."As a part of the improvement plan, new sidewalks, crosswalks and bus stops will be added to the area. TDOT said it is offering incentives to the contractor if the work is completed on time.Copyright 2009 by WSMV.com. All rights reserved.
