NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A soldier who lost his leg in Iraq came home to find his house roofless, but it won't stay that way for long.
Video: Volunteers Unite To Repair Injured Soldier's HomeThe Feb. 5 tornadoes ripped the roof apart at Staff Sgt. Chris Payne's house. The saying "don't sweat the small stuff" doesn't apply when the little things suddenly are nearly impossible, like holding your son for more than a couple minutes.
"The small things, it's really hard, and it gets to you emotionally after a while," he said.Last year, Payne left his two young sons and wife for a second tour of duty in Iraq.On Nov. 18, during a counter IED patrol, he was struck by one."I stepped on a pressure plate IED. It was small as IEDs go," he said. While he was recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center he suffered even more distress. The storms left the family’s roof needing about $2,000 in repairs."I’ve been going through the insurance company, and I was going to go that way," he said. But Payne and his family will get some help from a group of extended family.Mike Edwards with American Legion contacted the Marine Corps League, a local church and others about the Paynes, and a new roof is on its way."We made this all happen in less than 48 hours from the time we were out here," he said.Payne will soon go back to Walter Reed for several more months of treatment."You know, you were in the Army, and you get to the point where you think everybody is against you, then you come back here and I mean, it’s just nothing but support," Payne told a volunteer. But thanks to the effort of friends, Payne won't have to worry about his house."It’s overwhelming to be honest with you. All the amount of support I’ve gotten since I've been injured," he said.Volunteers from the Hilldale Baptist Church will repair the roof. They said they also want to build Payne a stronger wheelchair ramp for his family’s home.
