Thirteen counties in Tennessee have been authorized for Disaster Unemployment Assistance in the wake of last week's severe storms and tornadoes, according to a news release.

The money is for people who lost work as a direct result of the storms.

The money became available when President George W. Bush granted a Presidential Disaster Declaration at Gov. Phil Bredesen’s request.

Weekly benefit amounts are determined in the same way as unemployment benefits.

For residents whose workplace is in Shelby County, they should report to their nearest career center between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For those whose workplace is in Hardin, Macon, Madison, Benton, Hickman, Houston, Lewis, Montgomery, Perry, Trousdale, Williamson or Sumner counties, call the Unemployment Insurance Claims Center from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 1-877-813-0950, ext. 7599, or for the local Nashville area, call 1-615-253-7599.

Affected residents should have their 2007 federal income tax return, Social Security number and any papers with wage and employment information prior to the disaster available during the call.
