NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Gov. Bill Haslam and Dr. Candace McQueen, the Commissioner of the Department of Education, announced the next phase of the “Drive to 55” initiative on Thursday.

It’s the governor’s initiative to up the number of Tennesseans with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree to 55 percent by the year 2020.

The next phase is called Tennessee Pathways.

It’s a $2 million investment and will focus on students K-12.

“I think we’re at an encouraging place in Tennessee,” said Haslam. “We have record low employment, we’re producing better graduates that we ever have, but the challenge still exists. The world’s changing so fast we want to make certain we’re preparing people for the right things. So it is rewarding seeing where we are, but you also remember the challenge never goes away.”

Students will learn about the opportunities there are in the workforce and the skill sets they need to get them there.
