NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - State officials say 70 communities in Tennessee are receiving nearly $28 million in grants to improve infrastructure and health and safety programs.

Gov. Bill Haslam said in a news release Wednesday that the Community Development Block Grants will help economic growth and create better environments for residents of the communities receiving the grants to live and work.

The state Department of Economic and Community Development said the grants are funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The money will be used for housing rehabilitation and improvements to water, sewer and fire protection systems.

Funding amounts range from $44,950 for early warning sirens in Gadsden to $525,000 for water and sewer system improvements in several cities, including Benton, Dayton, Jefferson City, Mount Pleasant, Springfield and Trenton.
