As TDOT's massive I-440 reconstruction project moves closer and closer, many Middle Tennesseans are wondering: "How does it affect me?"

Tuesday night, TDOT will answer that question, and others, at a public meeting.TDOT is going to present the different options they're considering to fix the problematic interstate.

TDOT says they're weighing three different options:

  • Working on both sides of the interstate simultaneously while some lanes remain open. This plan would take three years to complete.
  • Closing half of the roadway at a time, starting with the eastern section, which stretches from the I-24 entrance near Murfreesboro Pike to the I-65 split, and then tackling the western section between I-65 and I-40 interchange. The would take just under a year to complete.
  • Closing the western section while crews simultaneously work on the eastern section (keeping some lanes open). This would take six months to complete.

After their presentation, TDOT reps will open the floor for a question-and-answer session. Folks can ask any question they want about the project.

While questions and comments are encouraged, officials said this meeting won't have any sway over the plan TDOT eventually chooses.

“This is strictly to talk to the public about what the traffic control options are,” TDOT spokesperson Heather Jensen explained. “It's really going to kind of explain what you're going to be looking at, depending on which construction option is chosen.”

Danny Kuneth, one Nashville resident, already has plenty of questions.

“When you start construction on 440, which is essentially the main artery for me to get to Vanderbilt, what time in the morning am I going to have to leave now?” Kuneth asked. “How long is it going to be? How’s it going to affect my drive?”

The two-hour public information meeting will be held from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the TDOT Region 3 Complex on Centennial Boulevard in West Nashville. For more information on the I-440 reconstruction project meeting, click here.
