ASHLAND CITY, TN (WSMV) -

Inmates at the Cheatham County jail were evacuated to the nearby courthouse for part of the day because of smoke.

The smoke started to fill the jail on Friday afternoon.

Officials said one person was taken to a hospital for treatment because of a pre-existing condition, not the smoke.

“They took ventilation fans inside the jail once it was clear of all the inmates,” said B.J. Hudspeth, Cheatham County Emergency Management Service. “There’s more inmates and more medical problems that can happen than we have ambulances. Luckily it didn’t get to that point.”

No word on what caused the fire or how extensive the damage was inside the jail.
