When you lose power, we all hope someone comes out and gets the lights back on as soon as possible.

Sometimes those linemen can be pretty quick, even on their off day.

Safety always comes first for a lineman climbing a pole in the rain to get your TV set working again after a storm.

On Friday, it was competition and speed that mattered most.

Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation lineman Bobby Buttery knows the drill. A fellow lineman is on top of that pole and in trouble, it’s Buttery’s job to save him.

“It’s something you never want to have to do working with friends and family,” said Buttery.

Today it’s not real. The poles are placed here, but not plugged in. No electricity, just practice and fun, a lineman’s rodeo.

It’s a chance for family and friends to see what the men and women in hard hats do every day on the job.

“Linemen work in every type of weather and storms, lightning, hurricanes, ice storms,” said Middle Tennessee Electric’s Keith Davenport. “We’re working through the years to do what we have to do to get the lights on.”

Intelligence helps too.

You probably don’t know what a drop-in pin mounted porcelain 15kv tie-top insulator is, but the lineman does and knowing that helps get your TV back on.

The Lineman’s Rodeo is open and free to watch all day Saturday at Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro.
