NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville father and son are sure to celebrate Father’s Day in a big way on Sunday.

Dad is 61, his son is 40 and they met for the first time just a few years ago.

Tony Thomas went 30 years not knowing he had a son.

That was Robert, who never thought it was necessary to find his biological dad.

Then they met and it all changed.

Tony and Robert, two Nashville piano players, first met seven years ago when they learned they were father and son.

“Well for so many years we were both doing the same things without knowing about the other one's existence,” said Robert.

Robert’s father Tony split up with his girlfriend in California 40 years ago and never knew she was pregnant. He never knew she had a cute little baby boy named Robert, who was put up for adoption at birth then raised by a loving family.

Tony moved east and began a career selling pianos.

“This is my 41st year in the piano business,” said Tony. “I started in the piano business when I was 20. I started two weeks after he was born, which I didn’t even know he was born.

Seven years ago, rumors, some research and the piano brought them together.

“We stayed late one night playing piano for the first time. I saw him play and that’s when I noticed his hands were the same as mine, but how he played the music, his playing was very similar to mine,” said Tony.

The piano isn’t the only thing they have in common.

“Kind of laugh the same, our voices are the same, our hands, laugh alike,” they said. “I wasn’t around him, but I think it’s our intuition, how we see things before anyone else does, we just have chemistry there.”

It led them here. Both now sell $100,000 pianos at the Steinway Store in Nashville.

“It’s every day we get to enjoy it. Every day is like a Father’s Day to me,” said Tony.

Tony and Robert do not have big plans Sunday for Father’s Day. They really don’t need to. Considering their story, there will always be plenty to just talk about.
