Despite latest carjacking, reported crimes down in Green Hills

Carjacked at gunpoint.

The four teens involved are on the run.

The victim was coming out of the FedEx on Hillsboro Pike. He noticed four teens walking across Hillsboro coming toward him. When he went to put away paperwork in trunk of his car, the four teens ambushed him. One of the teens pointed a gun at him and demanded his car.  

The victim tried to run away, and actually threw his keys into the parking lot.

One of the teens shot him in the leg, and the four made off with the car anyway.

The victim's car was found in East Nashville. 

News4 is working for you to find out what is being done to cut down on these violent crimes.

Clint McDowell is out in Green Hills every day selling The Contributor.

“I remember the time, about a couple of years ago, there wasn't (any) crime out here,” said McDowell. “In the last year or so, I'd say it hasn't gotten worse.”

McDowell believes crimes are magnified in this community.

“It’s really not a whole lot of crime, but when something happens, everyone going to know about what happened,” McDowell said.

Despite this recent carjacking and numerous reports of crimes across Green Hills, Metro Nashville Police says year to date, violent crimes in the Midtown Hills precinct are down 9.2%.

From January 1, 2017 to May 26, 2017: there were 316 violent crimes.

From January 1, 2018 to May 26, 2018: there were 287 violent crimes.

In February, the police department created a task force to go after teen robbers. Metro's crime mapping system shows a handful of crimes in the Green Hills area in just the last week, including two car break-ins and two thefts. Take it back four weeks, the map fills in quite a bit with multiple assaults and car thefts.

Since February, Metro's juvenile crime task force has arrested 134 young adults on 58 felonies, and 102 juveniles on 54 felonies. They've also recovered 72 guns and 39 stolen or carjacked vehicles.

Jane Short comes to Green Hills at least twice a week. She prides herself on situational awareness.

“I feel like this is one of the safer parts of town,” said Short. “I always keep my hand on my purse, and I make sure I’m watching other people.

“I wouldn't fight back, my life is more important than any car. Anytime someone points a gun at you, they mean business."

Right now, detectives are looking for surveillance video of this most recent carjacking. Anyone who saw what happened last night, should call police immediately.
