Police in Cookeville have issued a warning about a bear that has been spotted in the area.

The bear was caught on camera at the intersection of North Maple Avenue and Freeze Street on Sunday. Click here to watch the video.

If you spot the bear, call 931-526-2125 to report the sighting and animal control will be notified. Do not approach the bear.

Police issued these tips to residents in the area:

  • Just like other animals, bears are attracted to open food sources such as pet food or open garbage containers. Limit these sources near your home.
  • Most bears prefer to avoid an encounter and are as frightened as you are. The best way to prevent an unpleasant bear encounter is to avoid them all together.
  • If you find yourself near a bear, remain calm and back away slowly. Walk, don’t run, and keep your eye on the bear so you can see how it reacts. In most cases, the bear will flee. If the bear approaches, make as much noise as possible to scare it away and make your presence known.
  • Do not attempt to get closer to the bear to photograph or video the animal. You may find yourself closer than you want to be in order to get that perfect photo. Selfies are highly discouraged!
