CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A 71-year-old man is in the hospital with three young teens charged with a violent crime. At his workplace in Clarksville, longtime co-workers and customers are pulling for his recovery.

When she ran Super Suds Laundromat and Carwash, Nancy Danner-Monday hired those who were friendly and patient, people her customers would love. She knew she had that with Teddy Cook.

"He was someone you can depend on," smiled Danner-Monday. "He was just someone you felt comfortable and at home with."

Danner-Monday only works at the laundry one day a week now, but a deep, important friendship with Cook is still there.

"When my husband passed away, Teddy made sure that every week he came by," said Danner-Monday. "He said he had to check on his girls, and that's just the type of person he was. He did that every week until I remarried, and he came to the wedding. He left me in the hands of my present husband now. He's very warm-hearted."

Wednesday night, surveillance video showed Cook talking to three young teens when things turned violent.

"It was a shock," said Danner-Monday, thinking back to when she was told about the crime. "I wanted to cry. I didn't know what to say."

The video shows the teens repeatedly kicking Cook on the floor and hitting him in the head with the butt of a rifle.

Clarksville Police said the teens robbed a coin machine and stole Cook's truck.

"To see someone turn and be so cruel to a man like that, it breaks your heart," said Danner-Monday.

A 13-year-old and two 14-year-olds have been arrested, and Cook's truck has been recovered.

Cook told News4 he's being treated at TriStar Skyline Medical Center for brain bleeding.

As for the teens, Cook said, "The devil is in what they did, and I wish to the good Lord they'll straighten up. This isn't a way to travel."

"Sometimes kids get on the wrong path, and sometimes they need help to get back," said Danner-Monday. "Committing a crime like they did and seeing the effect it has on everybody, maybe that gets them to turn things back around again."

She added, she had Cook in her time of need. She's ready to return the favor.

"I'm there for him and always will be," she said.
