TDOT may consider closing sections of I-440 for construction

Posted: Updated:

It’s the most talked about construction project in Middle Tennessee, the rebuilding of Interstate 440.

It was expected to take at least three years to complete, but now there’s a new proposal to speed things up.

The original plan was to rebuild Interstate 440 in three years, but there's a new plan on the table that could cut that down to less than one year.

This was a game-changing announcement from TDOT on Wednesday about Nashville’s most notorious interstate.

“Our customers tell us routinely, get in, get out. What can you do to accelerate the construction,” said Degges.

TDOT is taking bids from companies to replace the existing concrete road with asphalt.

The newest option would be to segment the construction into two parts and close them down for months at a time.

The first phase would be the section from I-24 to I-65, closing down that portion for three months.

The section of I-440 from I-40 to I-65 would take a little bit longer. It would be closed for seven months.

Drivers would be diverted to I-40 downtown and a number of other secondary roads as an alternate route.

TDOT said if the contractors took longer than the allotted time, the company would be fined $400,000 per day.

However, it’s not a done deal yet. TDOT wants feedback from Nashville, the governor and the public before it makes a final decision.

No matter which design-build is chosen, construction will begin this fall.
