New maps released on Thursday show a 10-acre mixed-use development would be built adjacent to a proposed professional soccer stadium at the Nashville Fairgrounds.

Both are at the top of the hill where the flea market and expo buildings are now.

The Fairgrounds Executive Director Laura Womack said it made sense to move the flea market and expo to a location lower on the property.

A series of public sessions is underway so that neighbors and the general public can have input.

At the first session on Thursday, some fairgrounds supporters expressed fears that existing uses would be squeezed out, such as the flea market and the state fair.

"And there's no place on this property that can hold a fair," said Duane Dominy, a former Metro council member.

The sessions are meant to ask citizens not whether they want a soccer stadium and mixed-use development, but, assuming they are “a given”, what should they look like?  What does the community want to see included?

Some neighbors said they want green space. Derek Milner wants a market he can walk to.

"As long as it's an affordable place to shop,” Milner said.

Overwhelmingly, neighbors expressed concerns about noise and traffic.

"Right now, we would like to make sure the traffic is kept to a minimum, and I don't see how that's possible when you have upwards of 30,000 people come to the site for a soccer game," said Daniel Baron.

There is a community visioning workshop from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Fairground’s Creative Arts Building, as well as an Open Design Studio session on Friday from 10 a.m.-noon and Monday, May 21 from 4-6 p.m.

There is a flea market vendor’s only workshop at Fall-Hamilton School at 510 Wedgewood Ave. on May 25 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

There will be a public presentation to present the outcomes and recommendations on Tuesday, May 29 from 6-8 p.m.
