TBI releases results of annual school crime study

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Crimes are happening more often inside Tennessee schools, according to a new study from the TBI.

The annual report compiles three years of crime data that is submitted to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation by law enforcement agencies across the state.

The report tracks the volume and nature of crimes on campuses ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade.

The number of offenses occurring at schools increased nearly 14 percent from 2015 to 2017. Nearly 10,000 crimes were reported in 2017.

Simple assault was the most frequently reported offense.

More school crimes were reported in September than any other month.

"This study will hopefully assist law enforcement, school administrations, and government officials in planning their efforts in the fight against crime and continue to create awareness that crime exists as a threat to our communities," said TBI Director Mark Gwyn in a news release.
