WASHINGTON, DC (WSMV) -

President Donald Trump called Waffle House shooting hero James Shaw Jr. to thank him Monday, CNN reports.

Shaw is credited with wrestling the gun away from the suspected shooter and saving many lives at the diner's Antioch location last month where four people were killed.

Since the shooting, Shaw has raised more than $240,000 for victims of the shooting and their families through a GoFundMe account he set up.

"Mr. Shaw saved lives when he wrestled a gun from an active shooter who opened fire," said Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah at today's White House press briefing.

Last week, the White House said Pres. Trump was looking to get in touch with Shaw.

News4 has reached out to Mr. Shaw for more details on his conversation with the president but have not heard back.
